Word of Mouth is important to Maui Sunriders!

One of the most rewarding aspects of working at Maui Sunriders is the tremendous sense of accomplishment we enjoy when our guests recommend our services to others. That word of mouth and reviews are the cornerstone of our success here at Maui Sunriders. Word of Mouth is a critically important factor that differentiates us from our competition. And our reviews give our potential customers a glimpse of what to expect.

“Unique outdoor fun at our own pace!” 5-stars on TripAdvisor

This was a great way to spend a morning on Maui, and a full-featured tour, beginning with a narrated tour up the mountain in a van with other guests (I think there were 8 in our group, all couples), and then the view of the sun rising above the clouds, followed by a looonnnggg bike ride down the mountain, at your own pace.

We were very happy with our tour guide, Nikota, who shared his local perspective and stories about places on the way up. He also provided a safety briefing and we were supplied with a backpack with bike lock, and lightweight waterproof pants and jackets. On the way up, he gave suggestions of places we might like to stop on the way back down, for breakfast, coffee, or a souvenir – very helpful.

At the mountain top, we were a bit surprised by the number of people there – this is a popular sight to see, and there is a park ranger there to explain the setting, and even an artist who performed a native chant at sunrise. We had to jostle a bit to get pictures between the row of people who had gotten there even earlier than us, and who had claimed prime spots against the railing which separates you from the crater’s edge. Plenty of room for everyone and there is an inside viewing building as well as some designated overlook area outside. I would say there were probably 200 people at the top of the mountain awaiting the sunrise.

Our guide suggested we leave before the crowd started down the mountain, and expertly managed to give us plenty of time to view the sunrise, but still get us out of the parking lot ahead of the other cars and buses. We traveled a little lower on down the mountain and were given another safety briefing, fitted to the bikes, and given our freedom to make our way down the rest of the mountain by ourselves – about 26 miles as I recall.

Not at all hard to find your way back down the mountain and we were extremely happy that we chose Maui Sunriders because of the self-paced ride – you can take as much time as you like, or speed along if you’re comfortable. We fell into the “don’t bike much – kinda scared to go too fast” category, so we were passed by some of the tours that ride in groups – and we were glad we didn’t have to keep up with them! They were in packs of about 12 bikers, riding together at the pace set by a leader. This would have been too fast for us. The ride down is manageable for infrequent bikers – you coast almost all the way, so your biggest exercise in your wrists – riding the hand brakes quite a bit to maintain a slow pace. (My wife and I bike at different paces, so in order to stay together, we did use the brakes quite a bit! They are disk brakes – very safe and effective – just use them both at once.)

You’re not expected to stay with the other bikers on the tour. Some of the couples we rode up with were off at a good clip, and we were happily letting them pass us so that we could enjoy the scenery with plenty of stops for photos at our own pace. We timed our ride so that we’d hit a breakfast place when they opened at 9am. After a stop there for a leisurely breakfast, we continued on, stopping at a church, some overlooks, and eventually completing the trip by around 10:30.

The bike shop, where you turn in the bikes is literally at the bottom of the mountain and super easy to find at the end of your tour. There are several good choices to stop off along the way for breakfast – we stopped in one of the small towns about 2/3rds of the way down and even saw a well-known celebrity there, enjoying breakfast at the same little cafe.

The scenery is stunning, the road is well paved and safe – plenty of cars coming down the hills, but they all seemed happy to pass us safely rather than in a rush.

We’d recommend this outfit to anyone looking to get up early, take a leisurely ride down a mountain, and experience a beautiful sunrise at the base of a volcano. What’s not to love?

“Everything was perfect! They provide all of the necessary equipment and instruction to have an amazing safe and wonderful experience from the top to the bottom of Maui! Remy did an excellent job with instructions, providing history and information about the island, I got married on Tuesday and we had our first sunrise as a married couple on Wednesday morning at 10,000 feet, over the clouds. I highly recommend you do a sunrise downhill bike ride in Maui and I STRONGLY recommend you book it through Maui Sunriders Bike Co.”

“Great company with friendly staff, but we didn’t end up doing the ride by our choice”

We loved our sunrise bike down the mountain, which ended up only being the van ride (which they reimbursed us for the difference). There were wind advisories the day we went up and they advised that it was not safe to ride down and well I’m not a super confident rider so I was a little anxious about the ride since it was wet and windy. The sunrise was beautiful with some good clouds and it was super cold and windy. We were there just between when hurricanes Madeleine and Lester were around the islands so there wasn’t anything to do about the weather. We got a lot of great shots of the sunrise and enjoyed the guided tour up the mountain. About halfway down the entire other van (10ish people) and half of ours (5 people) decided to go ahead and bike down, but we opted to just ride in the van. The wind wasn’t that great at this point and we were beyond some of the really curvy parts. We met some of the others back at the shop and they said they really enjoyed the ride and it wasn’t too windy from the point where they started. We enjoyed the drive even without the cycling and got a some good recommendations from Jacob for restaurants in Paia to eat at when we got back to the shop. They processed the refund quickly and it was back on my card before I got home. Loved our tour guide, Jacob, who had just started with them. Highly recommend these guys!

“Great ride down the mountain ” 5-Stars TripAdvisor

We did the 9:00 am summit-tour and it was a great experience. We were shuttled up by Remy, who is an awesome entertainer and told us everything there is to know about the route down and the island of Maui. Thank you!

Sadly the weather was rather bad at the summit. It was windy and rainy. We stopped twice, at the summit and at the small visitor-center at the crater-rim. Because of the clouds one couldn’t enjoy the spectacular views, so we didn’t stay very long and Remy brought us a little further down to the point where the ride begins. The ride was very easy, we only had to pedal up once, the rest is downhill and we had to hold on to our brakes quite a lot. It stopped raining, when we took off and the sun came out halfway down the mountain. We had some really spectacular views and took a lot of pictures. This was a really unforgettable experience!

“Highly recommended. Staff and equipment were excellent. We did the sunrise tour but didn’t see any sun due to being in a storm cloud. Very very cold at the top so wrap up warm (we had 4 layers on and were still shivering).”
