How a Self-Paced Haleakala Bike Tour Compares to Guided Tours

How a Self-Paced Haleakala Bike Tour Compares to Guided Tours

Maui Sunriders Bike Down The Volcano

Most Haleakalā bike tour companies here on Maui offer only guided bike tours, and at first glance, a guided tour might seem like a better option, but there are numerous reasons why a self-paced bike tour is ultimately the best choice. Let’s compare some of the different features of these tours, and see why we refer to our tour as “self-paced” instead of “self-guided.”

Large guided groups.

On average, the guided biking tours of other companies will have about 13 people in each group. The guide, of course, should take into consideration the biking pace of the group, but this can differ greatly from the pace at which you personally like to bike. Thus, this could cause you either frustration if they go too slow or unnecessary stress in trying to keep up. Biking at the pace of the guide could be especially difficult for families with children. While the roads are safe to bike on, large biking groups do create an unpopular hindrance for local traffic and thus could pose a greater risk of an accident.

Small ‘ride at your own pace’ groups.

We started Maui Sunriders with the goal of offering a biking experience that was more accessible to families. Our family has always been active, and we loved biking down Haleakalā with our children. So, we decided to offer a bike tour with greater freedom – one where you can ‘ride at your own pace,’ as we like to say. Whether you want to bike down with your family or with a small group of friends, our self-paced bike tours provide visitors with a more relaxing pace – one more in line with the spirit of aloha.

Scheduled guided bike tour stops.

Those who enjoy structure may like a guided bike tour down Haleakalā. On a guided tour, the group will have several scheduled stops at scenic photo op points along the bike route. However, these stops are ones that the bike tour guide chooses, and because of time and the group size, the guide will probably limit the stops to only a few of the most popular tourist spots. Many of these guided tours do stop for brunch at a restaurant along the route, but here again, they will stop at a restaurant that the guide chooses. And this brunch may be the only time you get to stop in many of the quaint towns with numerous charming shops along the route.

Stop and smell the protea on a self-paced tour.

In contrast, on our self-paced bike tours you have the freedom to stop when and where you want to along the route. Enjoy a relaxing ride down Haleakalā where you can stop, admire the beautiful protea flowers, and really take in the experience with a self-paced tour. The beauty of Upcountry Maui is something you shouldn’t have to rush through with a large group. Stop at the Kula Lodge and Restaurant for breakfast and then stop again at the many shops and art galleries in the small towns along the way. The choice is yours with our self-paced bike tours. This relaxed pace is great for those who love to immerse themselves in the experience, those who want to get the photo op no one else got, and those who like to see how the locals live. This self-paced tour is perfect for families or couples who want to enjoy a romantic ride through an unforgettable part of Maui.

“Self-paced,” not actually “self-guided”

We often refer to our Maui bike tours as self-paced bike rides down Haleakalā instead of describing them as “self-guided.” What is the difference? As you’re driven up the mountain, our tour guides will point out and thoroughly explain different points of interest along the way. Thus, you are given a guided tour of the bike ride as you drive up, but then you can go at your own pace biking back down. This narrated tour will point out various dining options in the small towns on the route as well as explain the history of the area and interesting facts about Hawaiian culture. With this narrated tour, you’ll know where the best places to stop are along the route, but at the same time, you’ll be able to stop on your own timetable.

And while our bike tours are self-paced, your group is not left entirely on its own. Safety is our top priority, and thus we offer prompt roadside assistance. If you need anything on your Haleakalā bike tour, just call us and we’ll be right there to help.

So how do you think the different types of bike tours compare? Would you prefer a more relaxed bike ride down Haleakalā where you can stop wherever you’d like along the route on your own timetable or do you like a more structured ride with a larger guided group? If a relaxed ride with greater freedom is better for your family, then book one of our self-paced bike tours online today and experience the unique beauty of Haleakalā and Upcountry Maui.

Recent guest feedback:

Thank you for such a fun day. We had the best time on your tour.

Jacob was amazing. So relaxed and very knowledgeable about the island and volcano.

If I was to rate all our adventures, I’d say that our time with Maui Sun Riders was my favorite. The tips Jacob gave us going up the volcano were much appreciated. The doughnuts on a stick were a nice treat. You gotta try the guava filled doughnuts. They were AMAZING. Thanks to the backpack with a lock, we were able to explore the little towns and purchase some local art. I like to support local businesses while traveling.

Thanks again for a great experience.

Understanding Maui

Understanding Maui

Maui is a special place filled with real magic that some people have experienced daily for their entire life. To them Maui has it’s own time separate from the rest of the world and that clock comes from within. So don’t be surprised if you notice that this isn’t Kansas anymore.

Maui No Ka Oi

You’ll hear people from all the different Islands of Hawaii say, “Maui No Ka Oi” when they are describing the island of Maui. It means, “Maui is the best”. And it’s true. They say so because Maui has it’s own energy and vibe. It’s laidback but not boring. There’s always something going on when you are seeking an adventure or entertainment, but there are just as many opportunities for seclusion and relaxation here on Maui. If you are blessed with an abundance of time to explore Maui, you’ll start to understand Maui better if you begin at an unhurried pace.

Aloha Friday

Every Friday is affectionately called, “Aloha Friday”, and for good reason. It is for all intents and purposes a holiday that is celebrated once a week. Because these are the “islands of Aloha” we embrace and practice Aloha here 24 hours a day, all year long. In fact, Maui doesn’t have a “happy hour”, some claim we have one “ok hour” and 23 happy hours every day. Aloha means so much more then we can share here in this article. You’ll see and experience it for yourself no matter how long you are here.

We Celebrate at the drop of a hat

celebrations

There’s always a celebration somewhere on Maui for some reason. Here we have a different “Friday Town Party” in the evening every week. We celebrate because it’s Aloha Friday. 1st Friday is in Wailuku, 2nd Friday is in Lahaina, 3rd Friday is in Makawao, and 4th Friday is in Kihei. Every once in a while there’s a 5th Friday, and that Friday Town Party is held on the island of Lānaʻi. You can find more details at MauiFridays.com. Maui is home to hundreds of fantastic festivals, events and celebrations about the diverse cultures, music, dance, holidays, art, history and much more. Any excuse to celebrate with the Ohana is a welcome pastime here on Maui.

Directions, Distances and Time

Distances are typically measured in time rather then miles and 5 or 6 miles or more is far on an island. Remember that when you ask how long it might take to get somewhere, the answer is probably “probably 15-30 minutes” even if it could take 30-45 minutes, and when you ask how long something is going to take, you might get, “eh, 5-10 minutes” when it is really going to be 15-30 minutes or more. Here on Maui, when giving directions we use landmarks and island navigation terms such as “Makai” and “Mauka”. We also say “west side, south side, upcountry and Hana side” to mean the different parts of the island. Everything in the middle is called “Town” which is comprised of Kahului and Wailuku. So you if you ask where the Costco is and how far away it is, you might get this answer depending on where you are, “It’s in Town right next to Kmart. Bout 15-20 minutes if you leave now”. If you are asking directions to Maui Brewery in Kihei, you might hear, “It’s on Lipoa, Mauka of Piilani hwy”. Mauka means towards to mountain, and Makai means on the ocean side. So if I said that “Longs is on the Makai side of Piikea across from McDonald’s”, you can bet that I mean the CVS Drug store is towards the ocean side on Piikea street near a fast-food restaurant that you can’t miss.

Spam, it’s what’s for dinner

What is Spam? I’m not going there, but it’s not unwanted email, it’s something you eat. For most people vacationing to Hawaii is about experiencing something new and different. Spam is one of those things. It is a tradition here in Hawaii. Get used to it. If you stay in a resort and never venture out of your hotel you may never experience this island delicacy. But I can tell you that wherever rice is on the menu, you can bet Spam isn’t far away. My favorite place to dive into Spam is at Da Kitchen restaurant in Town. It’s on the Makai side of Hana Hwy. It’s kinda hard to find but it’s worth looking for! Try it with rice or have a Spam Musubi for a real local spam experience.

We only touched on a few of the amazing things that make Maui unique. There is so much more to understanding Maui that we will be sharing is future articles. What’s your favorite thing about Maui?
