Visiting Maui soon or planning your dream vacation to Maui? As the second-largest island in Hawaii, Maui is the perfect destination for adventure, romance, and making memories. Home to diverse landscapes, towering volcanoes, and beautiful towns, Maui is one of the most desired vacation destinations.
While in Maui, we recommend spending as much time as you can seeing our island’s beauty. Our favorite way to explore Maui is the Haleakala Volcano Downhill Bike Tour. This 24-mile biking excursion travels down the edge of the Haleakala Volcano. And then bikers traverse upcountry Maui on a downhill, self-guided tour. While some bike tours require you to wake up early and rush through the sunrise, this bike tour lets you sleep in and take your time.
Along the way, you’ll see gorgeous landmarks and landscapes, delicious restaurants and cafes, beautiful views, and much more. Learn more below about how the Haleakala Downhill Bike Tour works and how to sign up for one today!
How Does the Self-Guided Tour Work?
On the day of your appointment, meet us at our bicycle shop in Paia at 8:45 AM. We know… 8:45 AM sounds later than many tours in Hawaii, especially ones that promise a perfect sunrise. However, we choose to start our tours at 9 AM so everyone has plenty of time to sleep in. You are on vacation after all!
Additionally, it’s the sweet spot between the morning traffic and lunch-hour rush, so you won’t encounter as many vehicles on the road during your downhill bike tour. The morning air is warm and you get a chance to stop and smell the flowers. Many people prefer this over sunrise tours since they can calmly enjoy Maui’s beauty.
At our bicycle shop in Paia, we’ll get you outfitted with all the gear you will need for the ride. . You’ll also receive a safety briefing. We recommend this tour only to experienced bike riders because there are other cars on the road and switchbacks along your route.
After that, your group will board our vans and take a ride to the 6,500 Ft. mark of the Haleakala Volcano. During this 45-minute ride, our staff will give you a guided tour with detailed directions of your route. We will point out significant landmarks and historical sites to check out as your bike down the mountain. We’ll suggest different restaurants and cafes along the route and tell you about the cool shops to visit. We’ll explain some key features of Hawaiian culture you’ll see on your journey, and provide safety tips for different points along the way.
Once you reach the staging area at 6,500 ft. in elevation, the tour guides will take a commemorative picture of your group. The mid-morning sun provides the perfect soft-lighting for a beautiful photo And then… It’s time to ride.
You and your group will then begin your ride down the volcano. Our van will return to our bicycle shop in Paia but if you need our help we are just a phone call away. Our downhill bicycle ride is completely self-guided, so you can take as much time as you need coasting down and checking out all the cool spots. Since you’re starting later in the morning, all the shops will likely be open by the time you reach them.
